Fear and faith.
The two seem intertwined.
The child- barely hours old- evoking such fear in the King that he orders all Hebrew children under two to be massacred.
Why the fear?
The altar at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church in Half Moon Bay has a 25-30 foot fresco of Mary holding her baby. Her hands are positioned at the top of his head and under his bottom, her mantle draped over him as if she is, herself, a cradle.
His left hand grasps the fabric near her breast exactly as we have seen infants curl tiny fingers around an object in close proximity. On either side of the mother and child are three angels kneeling in adoration. The colors are various shades of pale blues, whites, pinks and browns.
Our eyes are drawn to the fresco upon entrance to the church and during the Mass; we cannot help ourselves from staring at this Mother cradling this child of miracle and mystery. I have never seen anything like it.
I understand the fear.
Perhaps not for the precise reasons that Herod feared but similar enough, I think.
This infant Child asks nothing from us and everything;
All at once.
He enters into our hearts and souls softly,
Quietly, almost without sound.
Once there, He offers peace, Life, wisdom
At no cost; just ourselves, whole, entire,
All at once.
On this Feast of the Massacre of the Innocents, I think of Herod once again…of all the Herods who live today; I understand their fear of this child of miracles, I know them as brothers and as sisters and I pray for them and for me.
